About Cub Scouting

A Whole New World

If you have not been involved with Cub Scouts before, it can be overwhelming at first. Uniforms, meetings, badges, awards, a new set of lingo for you to learn. Whew... Don't worry, we'll ease you in!

Visit the Cub Hub for a fantastic introduction to Cub Scouting!

Cub Scouts Do Things and Go Places

Have you been to the local police station and talked to the policemen on duty? Or visited the fire station and sat in the driver's seat of the pumper truck? Or visited the local TV station and sat in the news anchor's chair? These are some of the places you might go with your den or pack.

Have you been hiking or camping? How about fishing? Do you know how to tie knots? Use a pocket knife? Start a fire? Practice basic first aid? Shoot a bow and arrow? These are some of the things you might learn as a Cub Scout.

Cub scouts have fun and learn by doing and going places.

Cub Scouts Help Other People

Helping others and doing service projects is an important part of Cub Scouting. As a scout you should do your best to help others daily. As a member of your den and pack, you will learn how group service projects are bigger ways to help people, too. Whether you are participating in a food drive, or just cleaning up some litter in a local park, you will learn to work together with others to do things that are good for your community.

Cub Scouts Earn Awards

Each time you complete an accomplishment or learn a new skill, you will be rewarded. Sometimes the reward is a bead or a patch. Sometimes it is a smile on your parents' faces to see you grow and learn.

Packs and Dens

As a scout, you will belong to a pack of scouts from 1st grade through 5th. Your pack will have a monthly pack meeting and a variety of pack activitiesthroughout the year.

You will also belong to a smaller den of 6-8 scouts in your same grade level. Your den will meet 2-3 times per month. You will work with the other scouts in your den to earn your advancement through the Cub Scout ranks.

Leadership

Pack and den leaders are registered and trained members of the Boy Scouts of America. They are parent volunteers who have or have had a child in the pack.

Additionally, Tiger Cubs also have an Adult Partner who attends all den and pack events with them.

For more information on leadership training, see the Adult Training section of the Boy Scouts of America website.
